Hundreds of thousands of children passed through orphanages and care homes run by religious orders, including the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy.
Horrific stories of rape and beatings carried out by sadistic nuns and brothers went unbelieved and ignored for decades until publication of the Ryan report last month unleashed a national wave of anger.
Eighteen religious orders that negotiated a favourable compensation scheme with the Government in return for indemnities have been forced to agree to revisit the agreement.
The Fianna Fail Government, which yesterday faced a no-confidence motion after recording its worst results since the 1920s last week in council, European and by-elections, is also under intense pressure to do more for the abuse victims.

"ABUNTANTLY CLEAR"

30 years of child protection has taught us that every institution which has employees or members who have unsupervised access to children, and who are in a position of trust and authority, must have the highest levels of child protection policies and rigorous implementation.
The Irish experience has clearly demonstrated that internal monitoring and regulation is inadequate with regards to the institutions of the Catholic Church, and will result in failures to appropriately report offenders - there must be outside monitoring.
There are currently no less than 4 investigations and audits by the state into Catholic church regions in Ireland, all of which are uncovering continued failures in child protection implementation and accountability.
